Naoshima Art Clubとは、直島在住もしくは直島付近に住むアートが好きな人の集まりです。月に2回ほど集まりドローイング、クロッキーやデッサンをして楽しみながらスキルアップに励んでいます。こうしてみんなで集まることで、アートの楽しさ、難しさや新たな発見が生まれたりと、刺激になっています。

先日は、地元のおじいちゃんを招いてモデルとして登場してもらいました。
みんなでおじいちゃんを囲み、人物クロッキー。
写真で描くのとは訳が違い難しかったけど、たまにゲストを招くのも良いなと。

ひと段落して、みんなの描いた絵を並べてみると、
それぞれ個性があって見ていて面白い。
何が難しかったか、こんな風に描きたかった、あの絵はよく描けてるね、など
話合うことで自分が目指す次のヒントが見えてくる大事な時間。

私はあまり意識せず集中して描いたけど、
自分がどうやって描いていたのか振り返ってみたり、
声に出して思い返してみるのがとても大事だったりする。
学ぶことは絵のスキルだけではない。

アートは無限の可能性を秘めていて、
それを目の当たりにできる場所をつくれたことを嬉しく思う。

Naoshima Art Club is a group of people who live on or near Naoshima and share a love of art. Members get together about twice a month to have fun and improve their skills, primarily in drawing. By gathering together in this way, the fun, challenge, and new discoveries in creating art are revealed, which is inspiring.

The other day, we invited a local grandpa to appear as a model. Members positioned themselves in a half-circle around the model and did a series of croquis drawings. This is a greater challenge than drawing from photographs, but it’s valuable practice, and it would be nice to continue inviting guests once in a while.

When we pin up the group’s work at the end of the session, it’s interesting to see the different personalities reflected in the drawings. The group talks about was difficult, what we were attempting in a certain piece, what we feel we did well, etc. This discussion is an important time for us to reflect on what we will aim for next.

I focus on drawing unselfconsciously, but I find it very important to look back on how I was drawing and to reflect aloud on the process. Learning as an artist involves more than honing your technical skills.

Art has infinite possibilities, and we are happy to have created a place in which we can experience them.
