直島で交差する2つの伝統、直島女文楽と造船を辿る。 江戸時代、天領だった直島は芸どころで知られていました。明治、大正、昭和と一時の間、文楽が途絶えたが、昭和23年、女性達の手で再び誕生。全国的にもめずらしい女性だけによる伝統的な人形劇団の直島女文楽は現在でも続いています。再興当時は島の海岸で木造船を舞台とし上演されました。2010年の瀬戸内国際芸術祭では直島で造船事業を始めた津田孝氏が直島女文楽のために「直島女文楽丸」という船の舞台を造り、初期時代へのオマージュを捧げました。アート島センターでは、真実と想像力を融合させながら直島女文楽丸の発表に至るまでの年月を追っていきます。

The Puppeteers & the Shipbuilder traces two intersecting traditions on Naoshima: bunraku puppet theater and shipbuilding. Widely known during the Edo period for its bunraku puppeteering, the art form disappeared from the island until 1948, when a small group of local women began staging performances in a boat on the shore. Female puppeteers are highly unusual in a traditionally male practice, yet Naoshima's all-women bunraku troupe persists to this day. For the 2010 Setouchi International Art Festival (now Setouchi Triennale), Takashi Tsuda, a longtime shipbuilder on the island, created his final boat: the Naoshima Onna Bunraku Maru, a stage for performances that paid tribute to the troupe's early days. Assembling archival materials, interviews, as well as puppets and boats, this project blends truth and imagination to reconstruct the years leading up to the boat’s ceremonial unveiling.
